Our Friend Library (Kamarádka knihovna) 2010

It is a competition of children libraries. At the beginning children certify their library and these “school” reports make the major criterion: the declared satisfaction. Other criteria, e.g.: opening hours, WWW presentation, or percentage of registered readers among the children population in the community, are evaluated by the jury. For the first time the competition took place in 2007. The evaluation starts in autumn and the winner is announced in the end of school year the next year. The Friend Library 2010 is the City Library in Chrudim. The library was commended for the pleasant room, rich collection, and mainly for rich and superior offer of activities for children. Library collaborates with libraries in Poland and Slovakia. The competition is organized by the SKIP – Association of Library and Information Professionals of the Czech Republic, Ministry of Culture and the firm 3M.

KOHA-KOBLI: Integrated Library Management System for State Libraries in Spain

KOHA-KOBLI is an Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) developed by the Spanish Working Group of State Libraries. This Group worked in an evaluation of all the open source ILMS with the objective of selecting the  more suitable ILMS for this type of libraries or any library that wants to use it. Finally, Koha was chosen because it ‘s the more advanced ILMS.

Last months, the Working Group has worked in a report of required functionalities and possible modifications to the version KOHA 3.4. These new functionalities are very useful to the State Libraries and you can find the full report in this link:

Interesting Activities: Čtení pomáhá (The Reading Is Helpful)

The reading is helpful is a campaign and promotion of reading together with a sort of moral education. Children read books nominated by a jury (taking account of an enquiry in public libraries) and choose the best book. List of books are prepared in three categories: junior classes of elementary school, senior classes of elementary school or junior classes of gymnasium (grammar school) and secondary school. Each child has to show an acquaintance with selected books in a quick test to get a valid vote. The correct answers are rewarded by credits as virtual money. Children offer their credits for any charity project instead of keeping them. On average about 10 million Kč is distributed. Champaignis a co-project of more organizations funded by the private-sector donator.

The new Spanish Law of Legal Deposit

The new Law of Legal Deposit was approved by the Spanish Parliament in July of 2011

The main topics of this law are:

  • Before, the printer requested the legal deposit number, now with the new law, the publisher is the one who has to request the legal deposit number.
  • The bibliographic, visual, sound, audiovisual and digital heritage will be copyright protected.
  • The legal deposit will protect the works in both tangible and intangible format.
  • The archive of electronic publications on line will be created. When the domain is Spanish, the obligation to ask for deposit number is for the owner of this domain.
  • From now on, the documents must be deposited as a whole, for instance, all issues of a serial publication must be deposited.

The Digital Library of Romania

The second important program of the national system of libraries is represented by the Digital Library of Romania.

At present there is not in Romania any national program for the digitisation of the written culture patrimony. An effort has been done towards this direction in 2010, when a national aggregator was arbitrary established within the structure of the Ministry of Culture, from up to down, without a correlation with the real state of affairs. Last year, in 2010, following the anti-crisis measures, this phantom institution was dissolved.

The intricate state of affairs in Romania has lead to the establishing of a partnership between the de facto National Library of Romania, which is the Library of the Academy of Romania, the holder of the written culture patrimony of Romania and the Metropolitan Library of Bucharest, which has made an important investment for the creation of its own material basis, necessary for the process of digitisation.

In spite of the absence of a national coordination for the digitisation process, the double or multiple digitisation of the same title in other libraries is prevented due to two peculiar states of affairs:

  • 62% of the Romanian periodicals exist in a single issue and that is preserved by the Library of the Academy of Romania;
  • 45% of the Romanian books are unique and preserved by the Library of the Academy of Romania.
